I just got a hold of a document explaining the laws involved with registering Australian domain names.

Quote:
ELIGIBILITY AND ALLOCATION RULES FOR NET.AU

The net.au 2LD is for commercial purposes.

The following rules are to be read in conjunction with the Eligibility and Allocation Rules for
All Open 2LDs, contained in Schedule A of this document.

1. To be eligible for a domain name in the net.au 2LD, registrants must be:
a) an Australian registered company; or
b) trading under a registered business name in any Australian State or Territory; or
c) an Australian partnership or sole trader;
d) a foreign company licensed to trade in Australia; or
e) an owner of an Australian Registered Trade Mark; or
f) an applicant for an Australian Registered Trade Mark ; or
g) an association incorporated in any Australian State or Territory; or
h) an Australian commercial statutory body.

2. Domain names in the net.au 2LD must:
a) exactly match, acronym or abbreviation of the registrant’s company or trading
name, organization or association name or trademark;; or
b) be otherwise closely and substantially connected to the registrant.

Umm, the problem is that we don't fit into this anywhere.
I apparently cannot use my own ABN because the domain doesn't fit in with what my business is for.

Basically any domain ending with au needs to have a registration number of some sort.

Anyone have any suggestions? I guess it would be a lot easier just to go with a .net or .org for now.

Australian domain names are annoying. >.>

Using a .org is fine, but what .org would we use? asexual-awareness.org doesn't have anything that designates "Australia" in it, unlike what it would have been like with .org.au.

Yeah, .com.au is only for registered businesses. Glare

But yes, it does lead us back to the conundrum of asexual-awareness-australia.org being a bit long.

Then again, what else can we really use?

How does one prove eligibility for a .org.au domain anyway?

According to this discussion:

Quote:
If you're a club, all you have to do is warrant that you are. You don't have to prove it to the registrar, but if AuDA ask you to explain, you may need to have proof ready.

This site apparently allows one to register a domain name without an ABN. I wonder if it'll really work?

I dont think we would have an issue fufilling this criteria.

I mean the nz site is
http://www.asexuality.org.nz/
so legally i dont see why we cant have .org.au??? I think we should go for it.

Well ... we're certainly a Special Non-Interest Group LOL

And ... we're becoming more organised, with Parth's input LOL

Reckon we've got at least one legal leg to stand on ...

Give the ".org.au" a go ... what's the worst that can happen ???

Thumbs Up Woohoo!

Alright, I've just submitted our registration. I will find out maybe tomorrow if the domain has been approved.
